August 1, 2011 Legislature passed a law in Massachusetts stating that everyone involved with school teams – coaches, volunteers, players, parents – must have annual training on how to determine if a player has a concussion and to get help immediately. February 23, 2011 Dr. Culverhouse will speak at St. Petersburg College on March 1, at 7:00 pm. The topic is "Ethics, Integrity, and the Dignity of the Athlete". The meeting is sponsored by SPC's Applied Ethics Institute and will be held at SPC's Seminole campus. It is free and the public is welcome. Research at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine showed that former football players were more likely to misuse pain killers if they had taken more than the recommended dosage while still playing football. September 29, 2010 Chris Brymer, former starting lineman at the University of Southern California, is now in jail facing allegations of a racially motivated assault. Prior to his arrest, he was pushing a shopping cart around San Francisco and going to soup kitchens for food. He may be suffering from CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) which is degeneration of the brain caused by repeated head trauma, such as concussions. The disease produces emotional problems, including bursts of anger and difficulty in remembering and communicating. Doctors cannot be sure if Chris Brymer is suffering from CTE because tests cannot be safely done on people who are still alive. July, 2010 Jeff Patterson of News Channel 8, talks to Jimmie Giles, Randy Crowder, Mark Cotney, Steve Wilson, Charlie Hannah and Jerry Eckwood about their time as professional football players. July 25, 2010 Joe Henderson's article in the Tampa Tribune regarding Jerry Eckwood, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers player, who retired in 1982 due to injuries that ended his career. During the interview, the after effects from multiple concussions are apparent as he lost his train of thought and drifted in and out of reality. Gay Culverhouse remembers signs of dementia early on when Eckwood played for Tampa Bay Buccaneers, when he went to the wrong huddle or could not remember how to get home after a game. Mitchell Welch, Vice President of Player Personnel, at Gay Culverhouse Players' Outreach Program, Inc., helped Eckwood obtain benefits he was entitled to and put him in a new assisted living facility. July 25, 2010 Read this interesting article in the Tampa Tribune by Joey Johnston, Ira Kaufman, and Mary Shedden regarding Doug Williams, Lee Roy Selmon and Jimmie Giles. The three former football players reunited in 2009 for the 30th anniversary of their winning season. Chronic pain, the onset of dementia and other ailments prevented them from running through the tunnel onto the field as they had many times before. Former football players were not paid the millions of dollars that current players are paid. Gay Culverhouse Players' Outreach Program, Inc. assists players in getting the benefits they deserve to help pay for medical bills and other expenses.
